Difference between ground and air source heating

There are two main differences when it comes to comparing a ground source and an air source heating system - mainly efficiency and complexity of installation.

An air source heating system is much less intrusive to install as it doesn't require digging or drilling to install pipes underground. The trade-off with this is that an air source heat pump is slightly less efficient as the outside temperature is far more variable. The benefits are that an air source heating system is less expensive to install and is sometimes the only option for certain property types where they do not have sufficient room to install an underground heating system.

Ground source heating systems are more complex to install and they do cost more, but they are more efficient and as a result can be more cost effective over time. If you are looking to make a substantial investment in your property that is going to save you money in the long term, a ground source heating system is an excellent choice.

Your property will be warm and have all the hot water required with an air or ground source heating system. They are extremely efficient and work exceptionally well with underfloor heating. Radiators can still be used with heat pumps although require a little more consideration in the planning stage. There may be the need to upgrade your radiators to make sure the desired warmth is achieved.

Both types of heating system are fit and forget technology due to the fact they can be left running 24/7 and require very little maintenance to keep them operating.
